Cancelled: IBPI Faculty Workshop: Integrating Bike-Ped Topics into University Transportation Courses

Thursday, July 16, 2020, 8:30am PDT to Friday, July 17, 2020, 4:30pm PDT
Cover image

We have been monitoring developments here in Portland and at Portland State University with regards to COVID-19, and regrettably we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 faculty workshop. Due to significant impacts on campus classroom access, needs for social distancing, and travelling, we felt that this was the right choice. While we did not want to miss a year - transitioning this workshop online would not meet our goals for experiential learning. We will issue full refunds to all registrants.

Webinar: Findings From 15 Years Of Travel Surveys At Portland Area Transit-oriented Developments (TODs)

Tuesday, June 2, 2020, 11:00am to 12:00pm PDT
15 years of travel surveys at portland transit oriented development

PRESENTATION ARCHIVE

OVERVIEW

Since 2005, Portland State University has periodically surveyed occupants of recently developed  higher-density and mixed-use projects near transit, often referred to as Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs). The general objectives of the surveys were to better understand actual transit use, among other factors, of residents in these buildings. Between 2005 and 2018, the research team surveyed residents of nearly 50 TODs. With funding from Metro and the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, the research team carried out a two-pronged study drawing on this wealth of data. First, we explore geographic differences within the Portland region in terms of travel behavior and attitudes of TOD residents, including differences between TODs within the city of Portland, in eastside suburbs, and in westside suburbs. Second, we conducted a second wave of surveys for select TODs to understand if travel behavior or attitudes changed over time, particularly as neighborhoods surrounding the buildings were built up. In this webinar, we will present select findings from both aspects of the study.

Friday Transportation Seminar: Understanding Technology-Based Exclusion in Emerging Smart Mobility Systems

Friday, May 22, 2020, 11:30am to 12:30pm PDT

We are committed to making decisions that promote the success and well-being of our campus community. Like an increasing number of universities nationwide, Portland State is taking steps to respond to the global pandemic. Until further notice, all live events hosted by TREC will be online only.

Friday Transportation Seminars at Portland State University have been a tradition since 2000. You can join us online at 11:30 AM.

PRESENTATION ARCHIVE

THE TOPIC

As transit agencies modernize their fare payment systems, opportunities to pay with cash are reduced. This speeds boarding and lowers the cost of operations while also creating new sources of ridership data. Arguably, service is improved for riders as well as payment systems could work across modes,...

Webinar: Natural Pozzolans in the Pacific Northwest and their Beneficial Uses

Tuesday, May 19, 2020, 10:00am to 11:00am PDT
Natural Pozzolans in the Pacific Northwest and their Beneficial Uses

PRESENTATION ARCHIVE

OVERVIEW

The eruption of Mt. Mazama approximately 7,700 years ago created what is now known as Crater Lake. This eruption blanketed the Pacific Northwest with volcanic ash. This volcanic ash has been collected from several locations in Southern Oregon near the Oregon Institute of Technology campus. This volcanic ash has been tested and shown to have properties beneficial of a natural pozzolan. This seminar will present the results of a significant laboratory program to determine the natural pozzolanic capabilities of Mt. Mazama volcanic ash. In addition, information will be presented on a field application using the material to create ADA accessible trail surfaces.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Attendees will learn the location and natural pozzolanic properties of Mt. Mazama volcanic ash.
  • Attendees will learn trail surface requirements for ADA accessibility.
  • Attendees will be given information on how to use Mt. Mazama volcanic ash for trail stabilization.

THE RESEARCH

This webinar is based on a study funded by the National Institute for Transportation and...

Webinar: Connected Vehicle System Design for Signalized Arterials

Tuesday, May 12, 2020, 10:00am to 11:00am PDT
Connected Vehicle System Design for Signalized Arterials

PRESENTATION ARCHIVE

OVERVIEW

It can be expected that connected vehicles (CVs) systems will soon go beyond testbed and appear in real-world applications. To accommodate a large number of connected vehicles on the roads, traffic signal control systems on signalized arterials would require supports of various components such as roadside infrastructure, vehicle on-board devices, an effective communication network, and optimal control algorithms. In this project, we aim to establish a real-time and adaptive system for supporting the operations of CV-based traffic signal control functions. The proposed system will prioritize the communication needs of different types of CVs and best utilize the capacity of the communication channels. The CV data sensing and acquisition protocol, built on a newly developed concept of Age of Information (AoI), will support the feedback control loop to adjust signal timing plans.

Our multidisciplinary research team, including researchers from transportation engineering and electrical engineering, will carry out the project tasks along four directions that capitalized on the PIs’ expertise:

  1. Data collection and...
