Smart, Shared, and Social: Enhancing All-Hazards Transportation Recovery Plans with Demand Management Strategies and Technologies

John MacArthur, Portland State University

Summary:

In September 2015, The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), awarded a research grant to Portland State University (PSU) as part of its Innovative Safety, Resiliency, and All Hazards Emergency Response and Recovery Demonstration program. The project will develop, test, and refine an integrated transportation recovery plan for the City of Portland that includes use of transit, travel demand management (TDM), social media and ITS technologies. This plan will serve as a template for the development of a training course by PSU to train six other cities/regions in development of a transportation recovery plan that prioritizes transit and TDM elements.
