THE TOPIC
This presentation on the Division Transit Project will provide an overview of the project elements including roadway design, bus station design, traffic signal timing and operations and the Next Gen Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system. We will discuss some lessons learned and provide before and after results from the project.

Mark Haines, Portland Bureau of Transportation
Mark Haines is an Engineer II in the Intelligent Transportation Systems group of PBOT. Mark is a technical expert on innovative applications of existing and future technology, who supports connecting communities and creating safer transportation systems. Mark was the lead traffic signals and systems engineer representing the City of Portland on the Division FX project where he helped create a first-of-its-kind transit signal priority system. Mark is a Professional Engineer, a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer, and he holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from Portland State University (Go Vikings!)
Jesse Stemmler, TriMet
Jesse Stemmler is the Principal Project Manager for TriMet’s 82nd Avenue Transit Project, where he oversees planning, design, and coordination efforts for the Project. Previously, he served as the Senior Transit Designer for TriMet’s Major Projects Division and as Design Manager for the Division Transit Project (FX). Before joining TriMet, Jesse led his own urban design studio, specializing in streetscapes, transportation corridors, and public space planning. He holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, focusing on community design and development, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Northern Arizona University.

Portland State University's Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC) is a multidisciplinary hub for all things transportation. We are home to the Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation (IBPI), the data programs PORTAL and BikePed Portal, the Better Block PSU program, and PSU's membership in PacTrans, the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium. Our continuing goal is to produce impactful research and tools for transportation decision makers, expand the diversity and capacity of the workforce, and engage students and professionals through education, seminars, and participation in research.
