Portland State's New E-Bike Lending Library is Open

By Lacey Friedly, 22 October, 2025

The Transportation Research & Education Center (TREC) at Portland State University (PSU) has four new e-bikes, thanks to a grant from the Portland General Electric (PGE) Drive Change Fund. We will be allowing PSU staff and faculty to borrow these e-bikes to try them for a period of time to commute, take home, and use the e-bikes for their daily needs. Participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver before receiving the e-bike. All participants will be offered a helmet, lock, charger, and access to a secured bike storage area on campus.

If you are a PSU staff or faculty member and interested in checking out an e-bike for a couple of weeks, months, or a term, just fill out this Google Form. If you have any questions, please reach out to John MacArthur, TREC, macarthur@pdx.edu.

MORE FROM THE DRIVE CHANGE FUND

In addition to launching the new PSU e-bike lending library, the PGE Drive Change Fund also provide TREC with a new electric cargo tricycle – dubbed the TREC-cycle – that we'll use to represent PSU's transportation programs and carry gear to a variety of events. The trike got its launch at the downtown Portland Sunday Parkways ride through the Park Blocks in September (see photos from the event), and will be making an appearance next week at the PSU booth in the exhibition hall of the Mpact Transit + Community Conference.

The TREC-cycle was built by Portland-based company Icicle Tricycles, a company owned by Portland resident and transportation advocate Ryan Hashagen. In his role as the managing director of the nonprofit Better Block PDX, Hashagen has partnered with TREC on many community-led projects through the Better Block PSU program. The custom bike wrap, which shows an illustration of the Portland skyline, was created using art by Portland-based designer and illustrator Brett Forman of A Novel Design.

From transit buses and passenger vehicles to electric bikes and community service vehicles, the PGE Drive Change Fund is all about electrifying transportation in Oregon. The fund is made possible through the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Fuels Program.

Portland State University's Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC) is a multidisciplinary hub for all things transportation. We are home to the Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation (IBPI), the data programs PORTAL and BikePed Portal, the Better Block PSU program, and PSU's membership in PacTrans, the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium. Our continuing goal is to produce impactful research and tools for transportation decision makers, expand the diversity and capacity of the workforce, and engage students and professionals through education, seminars, and participation in research.
