This 90‑minute interactive webinar, offered through the HUD Thriving Communities Technical Assistance (TCTA) program and developed in partnership with TREC, is designed to help practitioners better align housing strategies with transportation planning and investment decisions.

Participants will explore when and how to consider housing within the transportation project lifecycle, with practical guidance on linking housing outcomes to transit investments, roadway improvements, and main street revitalization efforts. The session will introduce core housing concepts, planning considerations, and funding programs, and highlight best practices in housing development mechanisms, land use policy, and regulatory reforms that local governments can apply in different market contexts.

The webinar blends concise instruction with peer learning, facilitated discussion, and breakout exercises focused on real‑world challenges. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of appropriate housing interventions by project phase, insights from peers facing similar constraints, and information on accessing HUD Thriving Communities Direct Technical Assistance for follow‑up support.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Participants will learn how and when to integrate housing considerations into the transportation planning process.
  • Participants will identify effective land use and regulatory strategies that local governments can use to support housing near transportation investments.
  • Participants will gain a practical understanding of housing development mechanisms and how to match them to project phase, funding, and market context.
