Active Transportation Network Benefits Estimator | NCHRP Research Report 1149, Estimating Benefits of Closing Gaps in Active Transportation Networks: A Guide

Principal Investigator:

Sarah Melling, Portland State University

Co-Investigators:

  • Joe Broach, Portland State University

Summary:

The Active Transportation Network Benefits Estimator was developed to support state and local DOTs in estimating the potential benefits of closing gaps in their active transportation network. The tool is based on the methodology presented in the NCHRP Research report 1149: Estimating Benefits of Closing Gaps in Active Transportation Networks (https://www.nationalacademies.org/publications/29332). ... Active transportation networks are an important part of the transportation system, they improve access, mobility, and accessibility needs but also increase level of physical exercise, improve access to transit, and reduce out-of-pocket travel costs. There is also an increase in better overall health, safety, emissions, travel options and local economic opportunities for the community as a whole. This tool uses the research and calculations provided by the NCHRP Research Report to estimate the benefits of closing the gaps in the active transportation network and allows users to compute the basic method using relatively limited data. This tool is intended to support planning, project development, benefit-cost analysis, funding applications, and communication with decision makers and stakeholders. See More
