We are committed to making decisions that promote the success and well-being of our campus community. Like an increasing number of universities nationwide, Portland State is taking steps to respond to the global pandemic. Until further notice, all live events hosted by TREC will be online only.
Friday Transportation Seminars at Portland State University have been a tradition since 2000. You can join us online at 11:30 AM.

THE TOPIC
Getting people and goods from here to there is central to the ways we live, work, and play in the United States. The transportation networks we create as planners, engineers, geologists, contractors, consultants, advocates, and citizens involve a multitude of decisions. These decisions have great impact on who can get where, when and how; often connected to our structures of social power. This seminar connects those dots, questions our ability to make change, and calls participants to be actively involved in a transportation system that is curated for those it targets: everyone.
KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Connect transportation experience to identity and social constructs
- Understand how more equitable decisions can be made
- Describe the ways transportation network professionals are curators of equity
SPEAKER
Nikotris Perkins, Assistant Director of Social Equity, Oregon Department of Transportation
Nikotris Perkins (pronounced ni-KÄH-tris) is a Wisconsin native and the new Assistant Director of Social Equity at the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Nikotris has 20 years of experience working in nonprofit, social enterprise, and corporate environments with an emphasis on leading teams toward equitable outcomes. A talented facilitator who is a catalyst in creating brave spaces, she promotes confidence in identity and offers tools to navigate the trauma of racial, economic, accessibility, and health inequities that show up in the places we live, work, and play. As Assistant Director, Nikotris is focused on assisting ODOT stakeholders throughout the state to think about how we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion by identifying and addressing systemic barriers to ensure all Oregonians benefit from transportation services and investments.PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
